When the furniture is in place the floor is held down. It has a softer feel underfoot when you walk. Suitable for above grade & below grade. Basements, bathrooms, utility rooms and kitchens are perfect rooms to install this type of flooring. → Antique Wood Flooring consists of trees that had centuries to grow and which were used in old barns and factories built over 100 years ago. The floors can include the following types of antique wood: Chestnut, Douglas Fir, Heart Pine, Oak, Butternut and Cypress.
WOOD GRAIN TERMINOLOGY – ANNUAL RINGS
Most species grown in temperate climates produce visible annual growth rings that show the difference in density and color between wood formed early and that formed late in the growing season. The inner part of the growth ring, formed first, is called “ spring wood” the outer part, formed later in the season, is called “ summer wood.” Springwood is characterized by cells having relatively large cavities and thin walls. Summerwood cells have smaller cavities and thicker walls. The distinguishing features among the various species result in part, from differences in growth-ring formations. And within species, natural variations in growth ensure the unique character and beauty of each piece of wood.
TYPE OF WOOD CUTS
The angle at which a board is cut makes a big difference in how the finished product looks. There are three types of woodcuts: Plain Sawn, Quarter Sawn and Rift Sawn.
Is the most common cut. The board contains more variation in grain patterns than the other two cuts, resulting in growth rings more conspicuous. Lumber is obtained by making the first saw cut on a tangent to the circumference of the log and remaining cuts parallel to the first. The method is the most economical because it provides the widest boards and results in the least waste.
Produces fewer board feet per log than Plain sawed and is, therefore, more expensive. Quartersawn wood twists and cups less and wears more evenly. It makes a beautiful wood floor with a tight grain pattern. Lumber is produced by first quartering the log and then sawing perpendicular to the growth rings. Quarter sawing produces relatively narrow boards, nearly all vertical-grained, and creates more waste.
Is similar to Quartersawn, but the cut is made at a slightly different angle. This is similar to quarter sawing but the angle of the cut is changed slightly so that fewer saw cuts are parallel to the medullary rays, which are responsible for the flake effect.
Each grade features distinctive natural wood characteristics, as illustrated by these oak wood grade features. All unfinished hardwood flooring that we install is NOFMA graded.
Clear – Beautiful in every detail. Very clean, refined wood that is virtually clear of any natural wood characteristics. The color is very uniform. Mostly prime heartwood content.
Select And Better – This grade features a minimum of natural wood characteristics and delivers a rich, premium hardwood visual. Clean consistent color throughout with a minimum of color variations.
No.1 Common – For those who love the natural look, No.1 Common features distinctive grain patterns and wood character marks accented by subtle changes in color and tone. Very lively and colorful.
No.2 Common – A rustic look highlighted by vivid grain patterns accented with a host of wood character marks and contrasting colors and tone. An excellent value in quality solid wood flooring. Subject to availability.
RIFT AND QUARTER SAWN FLOORING
If unique is what you seek, look no longer. Rift and quarter sawn wood create very distinctive grain patterns that accent natural wood characteristics such as medullary fleck rays and wavy, interlocking grain. The result is a very beautiful, very durable hardwood that also reduces risk of shrinking, splintering, warping and cupping.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Each grade features distinctive natural wood characteristics, as illustrated by these oak wood grade features. Keep in mind that no two boards will be identical. Variations in appearance are completely normal. As your floors age, some colors change can occur. This is also normal but can be minimized by avoiding exposure to direct sunlight. Cracks between floorboards are normal as well, wood floors expand & contract during the change in seasons and high & low humidity levels. A wood floor should be viewed from a standing position in normal lighting to identify any flaws.
BORDERS & MEDALLIONS
These can add a wonderful touch to your wood flooring. They have become an increasingly popular choice for many that want to customize their homes. There are many different options. With our inlays from Oshkosh Designs and your imagination, there is potential for unique and unlimited designs for your floor.
Keep Your Floors Looking Great
Hardwood flooring is low maintenance but there are some steps you need to consider between refinished. When a maintenance coat is one of the options for maintaining your floor between refinishes. When doing a maintenance coat the floor will first be professionally cleaned. The professional cleaning uses a mixture of mechanical scrubbers, powerful vacuums and high PH cleaners to truly clean your floor. Once the floor is very clean it can be buffed to remove any small surface scratches. Then a new top coat is applied to give the floor a beautiful new finish that is uniform in sheen. These new coats will not only look good but also extend the life of your floor. These steps can help your floor last for a century or more.
Maintenance coats should be applied ever 3-5 years. These maintenance coats can remove minor scratching and bring back the beautiful shine your floor once had.

Infinite selections of sizes, shapes, colors, patterns, and textures so you can satisfy any design requirement.
With our vast array of colors, textures, patterns and shapes of porcelain tile, you will find your perfect style. Porcelain tile can be glazed or unglazed to provide a matte, semi-gloss, or high-gloss finish. Our tile comes in a large selection of vibrant to neutral colors, as well as many shapes such as rectangles, circles, diamonds, octagons and more. We will guide you in making the best choices for the application in your home or office.
Porcelain tiles have pigment baked all the way through the tile, known as color body porcelain, so a chip is less noticeable. Porcelain tile has a wet/dry coefficient of no more than .5° which makes it waterproof and can be used in commercial applications when you need a non-slip surface.
Ceramic tile is affordable, easy to install and easy to maintain, so it’s a good option for many environments. Ceramic tile should not be used for exterior projects when the temperature drops below freezing because it doesn’t withstand fluctuation in temperature well; however, it is moisture resistant, which makes it ideal for interior floors, counter tops, tub surrounds, bathroom and kitchen backsplashes and showers.
Ceramic tile doesn’t typically carry the color of the tile through the body like porcelain tile, so if the tile gets chipped, the flaw will be noticeable.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is it possible to install a solid wood floor on a concrete slab?
It is generally not recommended to install solid wood flooring over a concrete slab. Although this is the general rule, there have been successful installations of solid wood flooring installed over dry, concrete slabs. This entails several additional steps. A plastic barrier is set over the slab and taped at all seams. Then some sort of moisture-resistant wood subfloor (marine plywood) is built on top of the plastic film. Then the flooring is nailed to the wood subfloor. If you decide to take the chance be sure to consult with the manufacturer as to their recommendations. Be aware, you may be voiding your warranty. There is a new synthetic underlayment product on the market (called Sika AcouBond) that may allow for installing solid wood flooring over a dry slab. Check with the manufacturer of the wood floor to see if they will warranty this type of installation and what their recommended installation procedures are for this type of installation.
What types of wood flooring can I install on a concrete slab?
With the improvements in hardwood floors most engineered and longstrip engineered plank floors can be used over a concrete slab. Manufacturers do not recommend using solid wood floors over a slab. Engineered planks and strip wood floors can be glued directly to a clean, dry, well-cured concrete slab. Some engineered wood floors can be glued at the tongue and grooves and then allowed to be floated over a special padding that is laid over the concrete slab. Longstrip engineered planks can be floated over the slab with a padding underneath. There are some new “hybrid” engineered floors that can be floated over a concrete slab and come with a click (glueless) tongue and groove locking system. Note: New concrete slabs need to be fully cured for a least 60 days. All wood planks should be acclimated for 24-48 hours prior to installation. Be sure to read and follow the manufacturer’s recommended installation procedures.
Can we install a hardwood flooring over an existing vinyl floor?
Yes and no. Is the vinyl flooring is tightly secured to the subfloor? Does the vinyl flooring have a thick cushion attached? If the vinyl floor is thin and well secured to the subfloor you may be able to float a wood floor over it. In some situations you may be able nail/staple a wood floor over it also. If the wood subfloor is sound you may be able to nail a solid wood floor over the top. Be sure to get the manufacturer’s installation procedures for going over an existing vinyl floor and be sure to check if this type installation is warranted by the manufacturer.
What to I do to remove scratches in my wood floor?
This really depends on the type of wood floor you have, the finish you have and how deep the scratches are in the top layer. For small minor scratches in a urethane finish you should be able to order a touch-up kit from the store you purchased the flooring from. Be sure to use the manufacturer’s recommended finish products and test first by applying a small amount in an out of the way area. For deep scratches you will probably have to have a professional do a screen and recoat. This is where they use special sanding screens to lightly abrade the floor’s finish to help the new urethane bond better to the existing finish. With some wood floors you may be able to just replace the damaged boards. It is best to leave the sand and recoat, or board replacement to a professional flooring installer, or refinisher.
Can I install a hardwood floors if I have pets?
Although many homeowners have pets, hardwood flooring is not designed for the abuse a dog or cat can cause on a floor. Urine may permanently discolor the finish of the wood floor and large dogs’ claws will probably leave scratches in the finish. The type of wood floor you buy, the color and the finish will also be factor in how much punishment the floor’s finish can withstand before showing scratches and excessive wear.
Can an engineered wood floor system be refinished?
Some of the better-quality engineered wood floors have a 1/8″ thick finish layer and can be sanded and refinished 1 or maybe 2 times. The sanding and refinishing of an engineered wood floor is best done by an experienced hardwood flooring refinisher. If you have heat vents in your floor you can remove a heat cover to get a side view of your wood floor. This will help you check to see how thick you finish layer is. Always consult with the manufacturer to see if the recommend sanding and refinishing of the engineered wood floors.
Can I use throw rugs on my hardwood floor?
Before using any throw rugs on your wood floor you should know the type of finish you have on the floor. All rugs should be non-staining, meaning the colored dyes will not bleed. Generally in the presence of moisture, some dyes used in rugs may bleed through onto your floor and discolor the wood floors surface. Also, be sure the rug does not have a rough backing material that may scratch the surface of the floor. Clean dirt and debris from under the rug regularly. To prevent possible shading of the wood underneath the rug, move the rug occasionally.
How do we stop wood flooring from gapping?
Gapping in solid wood floors cannot be stopped completely. Wood expands and contracts with changes in humidity. Using a humidifier during the heating months may help reduce the amount of gapping in solid wood floors. Also, some wood species may gap expand and contract less than others. Engineered wood floors are much more dimensionally stable than solid wood floors and will show little or no gaps between planks.
What type of pads should I use under furniture legs?
Most flooring stores carry the recommended felt pads for using under chair legs and other furniture. The felt pads come in various sizes. Some pads just stick on the bottom of the legs and others need to be nailed on. Never hit the pads directly with a hammer. Follow the directions provided with the pads. Check and clean the pads often to prevent debris, dirt and small particles from being trapped in the pad, which may cause scratches in the wood floor’s finish.
What are laminate floors and how are they made?
Laminate flooring is a versatile, durable, attractive flooring with the appearance of a hardwood floor. Although laminate flooring looks like wood flooring, there is actually no solid wood used in its construction. Laminate floors are made up of several materials bonded together under high pressure. Most laminate flooring consists of a moisture resistant layer under a layer of HDF (high density fiberboard). This is topped with a high resolution photographic image of natural wood flooring. It is then finished with an extremely hard, clear coating made from special resin-coated cellulose to protect the laminate flooring. Laminate flooring is perfect for anyone wanting a durable floor for a fraction of the price and installation time of a hardwood floor, but with the attractiveness of real hardwood. This construction also makes laminate flooring more environment-friendly as it uses less wood in its construction and makes more efficient use of the wood fiber that is used.
What is the difference between laminate flooring and hardwood flooring?
Both laminate flooring and hardwood flooring can beautify a home. While hardwood is often thought to be a superior choice, there are several advantages to laminate flooring. Distinct differences between the two types of flooring often make laminate a more attractive alternative. Solid hardwood of any thickness (most is 3/8” to 3/4”) should be installed only above grade. Laminate flooring can be installed above or below grade, and over virtually any other flooring surface. Some hardwood flooring is engineered, meaning that instead of solid hardwood, it is made of several wood layers with a hardwood veneer. Laminate flooring, usually 7mm to 8mm (5/16” to 3/8”), is also made of several layers. These are laminated together which makes for stability and strength. The top surface of laminate flooring is a photograph of hardwood. High quality photographs faithfully reproduce the grain and color of natural hardwood, and the surfaces on quality laminate flooring closely resemble real wood. Although many people insist on hardwood flooring, laminates are a long-lasting, durable, affordable option that are quickly becoming one of the most popular types of flooring.
How do laminate floor panels lock together?
There are many types of edge joining systems used to connect laminate flooring panels together. Some laminate flooring connections snap together by hand while others require a light tap with a mallet and a tapping block. Still others use a combination of a “snap” click edge and a “bang” or “tap” click at the end of the panels.
Where can I install laminate wood flooring?
Laminate flooring is an extremely versatile flooring product. It can be installed in virtually any room of your home, above or below ground, over wood or concrete. There are several locations that are not recommended for laminate flooring. Because laminate flooring is a wood flooring product it is not recommended that laminates be installed in wet locations such as bathrooms, washrooms, saunas, enclosed porches or verandas, or anywhere that may require wet-mopping. Extended exposure to moisture of this type may cause the core of your laminate flooring to warp or swell. In some instances, with special installation procedures, it is possible to install laminate floors in bathrooms where water will not stand on the floor for any length of time.
What are the advantages of laminate flooring over those of solid hardwood flooring?
One obvious advantage is that of price; laminate flooring is typically half the cost of traditional hardwood flooring. Sometimes the savings are even greater, depending on the types of flooring in question. Laminate flooring is generally designed to be scratch-resistant and fade resistant, two areas where solid hardwood flooring is known to be more vulnerable.
Why is a moisture barrier used on concrete?
Concrete floors below ground are capable of storing a vast amount of water. It is crucial to avoid all direct contact between the laminate flooring and the concrete floor because the soil beneath the concrete can transmit humidity into the floor. Installing a moisture barrier over all concrete surfaces is mandatory for a successful installation and for the ongoing health of a laminate floor.
How can I get the shine of my floor to increase?
The shine can not be modified as it is a manufactured characteristic. Therefore, you must never wax or polish a laminate floor.
Can laminate flooring be installed in my screened in porch or patio?
No, laminate flooring must be installed in a climate-controlled area.
Can we install laminate over carpet?
No, all carpet and padding should be removed completely prior to installation.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY CARPETS CLEANED?
According to the EPA, if you have a smoker, children, and/or pets, AT LEAST ONCE PER YEAR is highly recommended to provide a cleaner & healthier indoor environment. Cleaning for health should be considered before cleaning for appearance.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR MY CARPET TO DRY?
In 1991, the EPA, medical and cleaning industry sat down and came up with the first cleaning code for carpets. As it discusses the proper way to clean carpet, the bottom line is that carpets MUST BE DRY within a 24 hour period! Steam extraction has been recognized as the best cleaning method. Our steam extraction drying time is between 1 to 16 hours. The encapsulating method dries in an hour or two only absorbing soils ready for you to vacuum when dry. It is not a restore method, but very acceptable for medium to light soiling.
WHAT IS THE BEST CLEANER FOR SPOTS?
We tell our customers 4 ounces of white vinegar to 12 ounces of water in a 16 ounce spray bottle, READY AT ALL TIMES, will remove 90% of what can fall on a carpet. This is to be used as a spotter, not an overall cleaner. At Handyman Services of Albuquerquewe carry a product called Dry-It-Out that can get up most any spot. Handyman Services of Albuquerquerecommends that store bought products NOT be used because of the residues these leave behind, (which causes spots to return), and color change and/or bleaching, especially those “oxi” products.
WHAT IS THE BEST CARPET TO BUY?
FIBER – Stain resist nylon is #1 for clean ability, #2 for wear. STYLE – Frieze hides footprints and premature wear look. By the way, WOOL is #1 for wear.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO HAVE MY CARPET CLEANED?
Anytime of year! Really the worst time of year is during the humid months only IF you DO NOT have air conditioning. What is the purpose of AC? To remove moisture from the indoors, right? After a carpet is steam cleaned, moisture that we can’t see is rising to evaporate. AC removes that moisture increasing drying time. In the winter months, opening a window or two about an inch will help the carpet dry faster because the rising moisture attracts to the cold walls of your home. Turning up the heat is the worst thing to do. With the windows cracked open and the heat on the regular setting, when the heat does kick on, the rising moisture will go outside. If you turn up the heat and don’t open a window, all the windows in your home will be wet within hours. Why? Because the moisture had no where to go!
WHY DOES A SPOT RETURN?
Ninety-nine percent of the time returning spots occur from using one, (or all), of the following;
1). Soaps & laundry presprays (will leave residues on the carpet). These are for laundry
2). Dishwashing liquids (will leave alot of residue on the carpet). These are for dishes
3). Store Bought or TV “Miracle” products (will leave residue & possible color change or loss).
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING IF YOU EXPERIENCE RETURNING SPOTS.
Residues are very hard for you to get out of a carpet! Residues will leave a sticky or rough feel. They attract air borne particles. Therefore, the spot will appear again. The rule is if you can’t get it out, then don’t put it in! Many carpet cleaners get blamed for the homeowners problem.
DO CARPETS SHRINK?
NO !!! Only cotton & jute are capable of shrinking and these are commonly used as backings for wools. Most nylons & olefins today have synthetic backings that have a “memory”. If a synthetic backing is ever disengaged because it was damaged by water for instance, it will only relax back to it’s “memory” at the exact size it was before it was originally installed.
What steam cleaning system is better, truck mount or portable?
Nowadays, there are portables capable of producing the same results as truckmounts. Many portables can adjust the water pressure and temperature as truckmounts do. This is very important for correct cleaning of carpet fibers.

What is Vinyl flooring?
Vinyl flooring, also known as resilient flooring, has been a favourite flooring choice for bathrooms and kitchens for many decades.
What advantages does Vinyl flooring have?
Vinyl floors offer the advantage of a no-wax surface that is also scuff-resistant and abrasion-resistant. Vinyl flooring is extremely easy to clean and in most cases is a long-lasting, durable product that will retain its appearance for years. Vinyl flooring also has the advantage of being one of the least expensive types of flooring. However, there is a wide range in quality of vinyl flooring products and consumers should be aware that low-cost vinyl flooring may not stand the test of time.
How durable is Vinyl flooring?
What determines the quality of a vinyl floor is the construction methods used in making the product. Most vinyl flooring includes a protective ‘wear layer’ on the surface that is made of vinyl or urethane, which covers the printed image underneath. Those layers are then fused to a backing that is usually made from some formulation of vinyl. The combination of ingredients in the wear layer and the backing will determine the floor’s look as well as its durability, and manufacturers have a wide range of trademarked products that go into these layers.
What sizes does Vinyl come in?
Vinyl flooring is available in rolled sheets that are 6 or 12 feet wide, and in vinyl tiles that are either glued down or come with an adhesive backing.
